Week three: stones that spell

A quieter week on the surface, and a busy one underneath. One new thing to find out in the fog, a few new things to cook, and a great deal of work on making everything you already have hold together.
Stones that spell
Somewhere past the wall, four standing stones are cut with the same shapes the children learn in the Landing's schoolroom. Nearby, a slab lists those shapes in an order. Read the slab, then touch the stones in that order, and for a moment the shapes mean something, the way a word you know means something. Touch the wrong one and every mark goes dark at once, and something out in the fog hears it. There is a keepsake for reading them, and another for anyone who reads all four without a slip.
From the smokehouse to the table
The smokehouse already takes the fish from the Wildwood pond and the deeper years. Now the hearth knows what to do with them: a smoked bass hash, shadow pike on bitter greens, a koi bowl with pale honey, an eel pie with the eel laid on top whole, and a chowder where the pike's lamp eyes are still faintly lit. Each one carries you through the day in its own way. Abel has opinions about the pie.
Small sounds
A harvest now sounds like a crop leaving the ground. The rain chime rings out across the bay before the bell under the water answers it. The cabin door pulls shut behind you. Many things that used to happen silently, a full bag, a request that cannot be done today, now answer with a sound.
Sturdier
Most of this week went into the parts you hopefully never notice. Saves keep a good backup even if a write goes wrong. Things left on the ground past the wall come home to the sea chest instead of being lost. A controller's cursor never gets stranded. Horrors that could be cornered into doing nothing now fight back. Online partners see the same week you do. Split screen at big text keeps notes out of the way. The test build updates itself.
See you in the fog.
